Lace wigs are hair units that have a cap base made out of a mesh type fabric called lace.
In order to make a lace cap properly, one needs the wearer’s proper head measurements.
The exact location of the seams in the construction of a lace cap base will be based on the contours of the wearer’s head hence the exact head measurement needed, which when exactly matching the lace cap ones will define the quality of said cap.
There are several lace cap constructions possible:
- Lace with Strectch in the middle
- Lace Front with ajustable Strap in the back
- Lace Front with small combs at the temple areas
- Full Lace with No Stretch
- Stretch from ear to ear over the top (crown area)
- Stretch from ear to ear at the back (back of the skull area)
- Silk top lace
- Lace with thin skin aroum perimeter
- Full thin skin
There are different types of lace cap construction that are especially suitable for full lace front lace and glueless wigs.
This list is not exhaustive but provides an overview of those most common types of lace caps.
Full Lace Cap with stretch in the middle
This is the most common cap construction and it is found in most in-stock hair units. The stretch panel is located in the middle of the hair unit at the crown generally and allows for half an inch leeway, so that it can fit head sizes that are up to half an inch larger than the given circumference. This type of lace cap base construction is great for beginners or first timers who are unsure with head measurements. The hair of the unit can be worn up in a high pony tail and parted anywhere.
Full Lace Cap No Stretch
This cap construction has no stretch, and the hair of the unit can be parted anywhere, worn in a ponytail and/or in corns. However your head measurements have to be accurate since there is no stretch to supply extra room for a comfortable snug fit, with this type of construction.
Full Lace Cap with stretch from ear to ear
This type of cap construction is quite similar to a full lace cap with stretch in the middle, except that the stretch part is from ear to ear. The stretch panel allows for half an inch leeway in order to fit head sizes that are up to half an inch larger than the given circumference. This type of lace cap base construction is optimal for lace wig wearer beginners who are unsure of the accuracy of the head measurements required. Downsides are wearing the hair up in areas above the ear may be a problem.
Full Lace Cap with thin skin perimeter
The thin skin type of material is called polyurethane and is around the perimeter of the cap base. It has been reported by many that thin skin seems to adhere better to the wearer’s own skin. Downsides: Can get hot between the thin skin and scalp, causing unpleasant transpiration and irritation by not allowing the skin to breathe as lace does.
